  • Hidemitsu Katsura Accounts of variations of stable isotope ratios on the earth
To date, there have been a considerable number of reports and investigations regarding accounts of stable isotopic fractionations and variation of stable isotope ratios. These descriptions depend only on biological activities, a little bit of differences of kinetic ratios of chemical reactions and a little differences of physical development. Although the relationship between the phenomena of stable isotopic fractionations or variation of stable isotope ratios and electric charge or electric field or electromagnetic forces has never been considered. Furthermore the relationship between the phenomena of variation of stable isotope ratios and cosmic-ray bombardment (spallation effect) also has never been considered. The object of this investigation is to discover the reason for variations in isotopic ratios in the environment to adapt the previous studies as follows. [ A ] Neutron bombardment from cosmic radiation (spallation effect) [ B ] Oddo-Harkins Rule [ C ] All kinds of isotopes have specific electrical potential [ D ] Previous study of Production of 7Be by nuclear spallation.

  • Zhang Zixuan Bioremediation of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons Contaminated Groundwater
Monochlorobenzene (MCB) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) are persistent groundwater contaminants worldwide. In this study, a pilot treatment facility - a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland with an open water compartment was established in Bitterfeld, Germany, and it was supplied with contaminated groundwater pumped from local aquifer. The degradation of MCB and PCE was measured and the relevant parameters were analyzed. The concentration of the organic contaminants was determined with GC/FID system, and stable isotope fractionation technique was used for the assessment of in-situ biodegradation of MCB and PCE. The results showed the effective removal of MCB and PCE in planted bed, especially in upper layer, and the isotope fraction analysis suggested that MCB and PCE may have different pathways that dominant the.

  • Wolfram Meier-Augenstein Stable Isotope Forensics. Methods and Forensic Applications of Stable Isotope Analysis
The number-one guide, internationally, to all aspects of forensic isotope analysis, thoroughly updated and revised and featuring many new case studies This edition of the internationally acclaimed guide to forensic stable isotope analysis uses real-world examples to bridge discussions of the basic science, instrumentation and analytical techniques underlying forensic isotope profiling and its various technical applications. Case studies describe an array of applications, many of which were developed by the author himself. They include cases in which isotope profiling was used in murder, and drugs-related crime investigations, as well as for pharmaceutical and food authenticity control studies. Updated with coverage of exciting advances occurring in the field since the publication of the 1st edition, this 2nd edition explores innovative new techniques and applications in forensic isotope profiling, as well as key findings from original research. More than a simple update, though, this edition has been significantly revised in order to address serious problems that can arise from non-comparable and unfit-for-purpose stable isotope data. To that end, Part II has been virtually rewritten with greater emphasis now being placed on important quality control issues in stable isotope analysis in general and forensic stable isotope analysis in particular. Written in a highly accessible style that will appeal to practitioners, researchers and students alike Illustrates the many strengths and potential pitfalls of forensic stable isotope analysis Uses recent case examples to bridge underlying principles with technical applications Presents hands-on applications that let experienced researchers and forensic practitioners match problems with success stories Includes new chapters devoted to aspects of quality control and quality assurance, including scale normalisation, the identical treatment principle, hydrogen exchange and accreditation Stable Isotope Forensics, 2nd Edition is an important professional resource for forensic scientists, law enforcement officials, public prosecutors, defence attorneys, forensic anthropologists and others for whom isotope profiling has become an indispensable tool of the trade. It is also an excellent introduction to the field for senior undergraduate and graduate forensic science students. «All students of forensic criminology, and all law enforcement officers responsible for the investigation of serious crime , will want to study this book. Wolfram highlights the value, and future potential, of Stable Isotope Forensics as an emerging powerful tool in the investigation of crime.» —Roy McComb, Deputy Director, Specialist Investigations, National Crime Agency (NCA), UK “A single author text in these days is rare and the value of this book lies in the dedication and experience of the author which is evident in the clarity of prose, the honest illustration of evidence and the realistic practical application of the subject – it makes this a text of genuine scientific value.” – Prof Dame Sue Black, PhD, DBE, OBE, FRSE, Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, University of Dundee,.

  • Yuxiang Mao Organomercury Species in the Florida Everglades
In this study, a new method was developed based on aqueous phenylation, purge-and-trap preconcentration, gas chromatography (GC) separation, and detection by atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). Using the developed method, both monomethylmercury and monoethylmercury were detected in a number of soil and sediment samples collected from the Florida Everglades. The identity of monoethylmercury was verified by purge-and-trap-GC/MS analysis. The possibility of analytical artifact was excluded by using stable isotope tracer technique in combination with ICPMS detection. Soil incubation and sawgrass culture experiments using stable isotope tracers revealed that monomethylmercury was mainly produced by microbial activities under anaerobic conditions. However, ethylation of Hg was not confirmed in those experiments. Further experiments revealed that trace levels of ethyllead species were able to transfer ethyl groups to Hg in both deionized water and freshwater matrixes, producing monoethylmercury. This might partially accounted for the occurrence of monoethylmercury in the Florida.

  • Kate Pound Reconstructing Earth's Climate History. Inquiry-based Exercises for Lab and Class
The context for understanding global climate change today lies in the records of Earth’s past. This is demonstrated by decades of paleoclimate research by scientists in organizations such as the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), the Antarctic Geological Drilling Program (ANDRILL), and many others. The purpose of this full colour textbook is to put key data and published case studies of past climate change at your fingertips, so that you can experience the nature of paleoclimate reconstruction. Using foundational geologic concepts, students explore a wide variety of topics, including: marine sediments, age determination, stable isotope paleoclimate proxies, Cenozoic climate change, climate cycles, polar climates, and abrupt warming and cooling events, students are invited to evaluate published scientific data, practice developing and testing hypotheses, and infer the broader implications of scientific results. It is our philosophy that addressing how we know is as important as addressing what we know about past climate change. Making climate change science accessible is the goal of this book. This book is intended for earth science students at a variety of levels studying paleoclimatology, oceanography, Quaternary science, or earth-system science. Additional resources for this book can be found at:.

  • Matthew Escarra Quantum Cascade Lasers and Optical Metamaterials
Quantum cascade (QC) lasers have application in areas such as medical diagnostics and homeland security. Optical metamaterials have novel interactions with light and potential application for sub-wavelength imaging and optical cloaking. This work first explores new approaches to designing QC lasers. High performance QC lasers are described with a voltage defect of only 19 meV, resulting in record voltage efficiency. Lasers with ultra-strong coupling attain 50% wall-plug efficiency. The thermoelectric effect is measured for the first time within QC lasers, informing further performance enhancements. This work then describes two efforts to improve mid-IR metamaterials. Negative refraction bandwidth and dispersion properties are improved through the use of multiple-metamaterial stacks. QC gain regions are added to these metamaterials to reduce their absorption loss. Finally, QC lasers are developed for trace gas sensing of CO2 isotopes, and a techno-economic model is used to value improved CO2 isotope-based sequestration leakage monitoring. QC laser applications in non-invasive tissue measurements, inter-planetary sensors, C60 spectroscopy, and IR countermeasures are also.
