  • Zhang Zixuan Bioremediation of Chlorinated Hydrocarbons Contaminated Groundwater
Monochlorobenzene (MCB) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) are persistent groundwater contaminants worldwide. In this study, a pilot treatment facility - a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland with an open water compartment was established in Bitterfeld, Germany, and it was supplied with contaminated groundwater pumped from local aquifer. The degradation of MCB and PCE was measured and the relevant parameters were analyzed. The concentration of the organic contaminants was determined with GC/FID system, and stable isotope fractionation technique was used for the assessment of in-situ biodegradation of MCB and PCE. The results showed the effective removal of MCB and PCE in planted bed, especially in upper layer, and the isotope fraction analysis suggested that MCB and PCE may have different pathways that dominant the.

  • Hidemitsu Katsura Accounts of variations of stable isotope ratios on the earth
To date, there have been a considerable number of reports and investigations regarding accounts of stable isotopic fractionations and variation of stable isotope ratios. These descriptions depend only on biological activities, a little bit of differences of kinetic ratios of chemical reactions and a little differences of physical development. Although the relationship between the phenomena of stable isotopic fractionations or variation of stable isotope ratios and electric charge or electric field or electromagnetic forces has never been considered. Furthermore the relationship between the phenomena of variation of stable isotope ratios and cosmic-ray bombardment (spallation effect) also has never been considered. The object of this investigation is to discover the reason for variations in isotopic ratios in the environment to adapt the previous studies as follows. [ A ] Neutron bombardment from cosmic radiation (spallation effect) [ B ] Oddo-Harkins Rule [ C ] All kinds of isotopes have specific electrical potential [ D ] Previous study of Production of 7Be by nuclear spallation.

  • Hasnah Haron Calcium absorption from tempeh using dual stable isotope technique
Tempeh is a traditional fermented soybean product, which is normally produced by the cottage industry in Malaysia and normally consumed as fried, boiled, steamed or roasted. In Malaysian diet, tempeh is categorized as one of the calcium-containing food source in addition to milk and dairy products. The postmenopausal Malay women in Malaysia were reported to consume only 30–60% from the recommended 1,000 mg calcium/day. Thus, in order to assess the bioavailability of tempeh as a calcium source, fractional calcium absorption from tempeh was determined in 20 healthy postmenopausal Malay women. It was compared to that observed from milk using dual stable isotopes (42Ca and 44Ca) approach in a randomized cross over design. The same load of calcium (130 mg) from either milk or tempeh was given to the subjects, with a one-month of wash out period between each test meal. All urine was collected from subjects after the 24-h of post-dosing and ratio of the isotopes in urine was determined using the magnetic sector Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer. Average fractional calcium absorption from tempeh did not differ significantly from.

  • Kate Pound Reconstructing Earth's Climate History. Inquiry-based Exercises for Lab and Class
The context for understanding global climate change today lies in the records of Earth’s past. This is demonstrated by decades of paleoclimate research by scientists in organizations such as the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), the Antarctic Geological Drilling Program (ANDRILL), and many others. The purpose of this full colour textbook is to put key data and published case studies of past climate change at your fingertips, so that you can experience the nature of paleoclimate reconstruction. Using foundational geologic concepts, students explore a wide variety of topics, including: marine sediments, age determination, stable isotope paleoclimate proxies, Cenozoic climate change, climate cycles, polar climates, and abrupt warming and cooling events, students are invited to evaluate published scientific data, practice developing and testing hypotheses, and infer the broader implications of scientific results. It is our philosophy that addressing how we know is as important as addressing what we know about past climate change. Making climate change science accessible is the goal of this book. This book is intended for earth science students at a variety of levels studying paleoclimatology, oceanography, Quaternary science, or earth-system science. • James Grissom Growth and Physiology of Pinus taeda Trees affected by Root Genotype
Effects of root and shoot genotypes on productivity and physiology of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) seedlings were evaluated in contrasting nutrient regimes. Twelve-week-old seedlings from contrasting provenances were grafted reciprocally to facilitate distinction of rootstock and scion effects. Five families each from mesic and xeric regions were planted in a split-plot design on a nutrient-poor site. Half of the plots were fertilized annually. Total biomass production among families was positively related to proportional biomass allocation to roots. Rootstock did affect stem growth efficiency. Different root genotypes were associated with subtle changes in biomass allocation. Provenances differed in leaf stomatal conductance but not in net photosynthesis. Rootstock affected stomatal conductance, but not WUE of scions. Rootstocks also affected leaf carbon isotope content (C13), in that xeric rootstocks were associated with lower C13. The findings may have utility in genotype selection for environments where soil water limits growth. Results should be informative and useful for tree biology scientists, plant breeders, and plant.

Fernando Corfu Microstructural Geochronology. Planetary Records Down to Atom Scale
Microstructural Geochronology Geochronology techniques enable the study of geological evolution and environmental change over time. This volume integrates two aspects of geochronology: one based on classical methods of orientation and spatial patterns, and the other on ratios of radioactive isotopes and their decay products. The chapters illustrate how material science techniques are taking this field to the atomic scale, enabling us to image the chemical and structural record of mineral lattice growth and deformation, and sometimes the patterns of radioactive parent and daughter atoms themselves, to generate a microstructural geochronology from some of the most resilient materials in the solar system. First compilation of research focusing on the crystal structure, material properties, and chemical zoning of the geochronology mineral archive down to nanoscale Novel comparisons of mineral time archives from different rocky planets and asteroids and their shock metamorphic histories Fundamentals on how to reconstruct and date radiogenic isotope distributions using atom probe tomography Microstructural Geochronology will be a valuable resource for graduate students, academics, and researchers in the fields of petrology, geochronology, mineralogy, geochemistry, planetary geology, astrobiology, chemistry, and material science. It will also appeal to philosophers and historians of science from other.
